A two color cutlery tray mold is a specialized injection mold designed to combine two different colors or materials into a single kitchen organization product. Compared with conventional single-color injection molding, a two-color mold requires more precise mold design, material coordination, hot runner control, and injection molding technology.

For this project, Focare Mould developed a PP + TPE two-color cutlery tray mold for high-volume production. The mold is designed around a Haitian MA5300 injection molding machine and uses separate needle valve hot runner systems for the PP and TPE components.

The PP side uses a 5-point needle valve system, while the TPE side uses a 7-point needle valve system. The mold is manufactured using P20H mold steel with a hardness of approximately 28–30 HRC, providing a practical balance between machining performance, mold durability, and production requirements.

PP + TPE Two Color Injection Molding

The key feature of this project is the combination of PP and TPE in a two-color injection molding process.

PP provides the structural foundation of the cutlery tray, while TPE can be used for areas where softness, flexibility, cushioning, or anti-slip performance is required.

Instead of manufacturing the two components separately and assembling them afterward, a 2K injection molding process allows the two materials to be integrated into one finished product.

This can potentially reduce secondary assembly operations and create a cleaner, more integrated product appearance.

However, PP and TPE require careful consideration during mold design because their processing characteristics are different.

The seven injection points help distribute TPE across the required product areas and provide greater control over the filling process.

For a two-material product, the TPE injection system must also work together with the PP component and the overall mold structure.

PP filling → mold positioning → TPE filling → bonding/contact area → final product dimensions
