PP + TPE Two-Component Design

The collapsible funnel combines two materials with different functions.

The rigid PP structure provides support around the upper rim and outlet area, helping the funnel maintain its overall shape.

The flexible TPE section forms the collapsible body, allowing the funnel to expand during use and fold into a compact shape for storage.

Because these two materials behave differently during injection moulding, the product and mould design must consider material compatibility, bonding, shrinkage and injection parameters.

Two-Color Injection Moulding Process

The PP+TPE collapsible funnel can be manufactured using a two-color injection moulding process.

Depending on the customer's injection machine and production requirements, different moulding solutions can be evaluated, including an integrated 2K rotary mould or other suitable overmolding processes.

For high-volume production, an integrated two-color injection mould can improve positioning accuracy between the PP and TPE components while reducing additional handling between separate moulding operations.

Precision Folding Area

The folding area is one of the most critical parts of a collapsible funnel injection mould.

The flexible TPE section contains relatively thin folding features that must be accurately controlled during mould manufacturing.

If the dimensions of these areas are inconsistent, the finished funnel may become too stiff, too soft or difficult to fold smoothly.

High-precision machining is therefore required to maintain consistent wall thickness and geometry throughout the folding sections.

Preventing Cracks & Incomplete Filling

Because the folding section is thin, proper filling is particularly important.

Gate position, material flow, venting and injection parameters must be carefully considered to ensure that the TPE completely fills the thin areas.

Improper filling may result in short shots, weak sections or cracking after repeated folding.

The mould structure and injection parameters should therefore be optimized together to achieve both good appearance and reliable folding performance.

PP + TPE Bonding

Good bonding between PP and TPE is another important consideration for this type of product.

The product structure, material grades, interface geometry and moulding conditions all influence the bonding performance between the rigid and flexible materials.

Proper overmolding design helps prevent separation between the PP and TPE components during repeated folding and normal product use.

Stable Two-Color Mould Structure

Accurate positioning between the first and second injection stages is essential for consistent product quality.

The mould structure must maintain precise alignment so that the second material is injected into the correct position without excessive flash or mismatch.

For continuous production, the moving components, positioning system and moulding mechanism must also provide reliable operation over repeated production cycles.
